At Down To Earth we make it very clear that we cannot CURE mental retardation. We can, however, do a number of things that parents find very helpful. Sometimes parents of children with retardation are simply not able to admit that the child has limitations and therefore, they expect far too much from the child which is frustrating to both child and parent. We help parents accurately assess a child’s abilities and have reasonable expectations. Parents might be plagued by guilty feelings that prevent them from doing things for their child that might be helpful. We help parents get over these feelings so that they can access a number of great services that are available. We also help parents deal with any sense of loss or grief they might have by pointing out their child’s strengths, talents, and abilities.
