Discomfort Before You Begin Therapy

Fear of the Unknown

The most powerful challenge that faces us as humans is to overcome the fear of the unknown. We become comfortable with the familiar and we do not like to step outside of that “comfort zone” into regions where we cannot predict what might happen. If you have never been involved in therapy, it can be very intimidating. You have no idea what might happen, what the doctor might say to you, what you might be asked to do, how much it might cost, how long it will take, whether or not it will work, or if it will be difficult, painful, or perhaps impossible.

At Down To Earth, we acknowledge this very real and normal fear. We encourage you to ask as many questions as you need to in order to feel comfortable to begin. This is why we offer the FREE consultation session. Come check us out and see how you like us. There is no cost but your time. The only risk you are taking is that you might decide to begin!

Pride

We hate to admit it, but the other major barrier to beginning therapy is pride. We like to think that we are intelligent, resourceful, healthy, and normal. Going to a therapist seems to be an admission that there is something wrong with us.

Okay, what if something goes wrong with your car? Are you “intelligent” enough to replace your own radiator? Do you feel “stupid” going to a mechanic? Of course not, that’s just something you don’t know how to do. At Down To Earth, we teach you how to do things you don’t know how to do for about the price of a good mechanic, and the mechanic doesn’t teach you how to do it yourself next time. We do.

What if you lose your house keys? Are you “resourceful” enough to get into your house? Probably, but don’t you ruin something trying? Do you feel “lazy” calling a locksmith? Of course not, you call them because they can help you more efficiently than you could do it yourself. And, if you lose your keys again, you’ve got to call them again. At Down To Earth, we provide you with new keys you can use for the rest of your life.

What if you have a sore throat? Does that mean you are “not healthy?” No, it just means you aren’t feeling well. Can you do your own medical treatment at home? For a sore throat, probably. What if the sore throat persisted for a week and made it difficult for you to eat or talk? Would you be ashamed to admit that you weren’t “healthy?” No, you would go to a doctor and get a simple remedy and be feeling better in a matter of days. At Down To Earth, we provide common sense solutions for everyday problems and restore your health as quickly as possible. We also teach you how to treat minor problems at home without having to come in.

What if you have a problem ? Does that mean you are not “normal?” No, it means you are very normal. You are a human being having a bit of a difficult time with something. We have yet to hear of someone who never had a problem. If we ever meet that person, we will definitely call him “abnormal!” At Down To Earth, we have no concept of what is “normal.” Whatever makes you happy, as long as it isn’t hurting anyone else, is “normal.” We help restore you to whatever your definition of normal may be. Or, we might convince you that you already are normal and don’t need to change a thing.
